Suomenlinna is a World Heritage Site and one of the most popular places in Finland. The history begins in the mid18th century, when Finland was still part of Sweden. Today in Suomenlinna you can explore the fortress, museums and relax in restaurants or bring your own food and have a picnic.

It only takes 15 minutes by ferry from the Market Square to get to Suomenlinna. The fortress is open 365 days and visitors are not charged an admission fee – you only need to pay for the ferry crossing.

Suomenlinna Church
In one of the central locatons of the fortress you can find Suomenlinna church. It is one of the oldest shrines in Helsinki. The onion domed church was originally built as an orthodox church but it was converted into a Lutheran church in the 1323s when Finland become independent. In the church tower there is stll a working lighthouse serving ship and air traffic in Helsinki.

A guided tour is one of the the best way to explore the fortress and its history.In the summer months (1 June through 31 August), guided tours are given in Finnish, Swedish, English, Russian and Chinese. During the winter season, tours are available only on weekends, and the languages are English and Russian.
